The Vietnamese surname Nguyen is the second-most common name in the 2004 residential White Pages, with 4190 entries. Smith is the most common Victorian surname, with 7611 entries.

Melbourne is home to the third-biggest Greek population in the world, after Athens and Thessaloniki. Melbourne's Greek community is 350,000 strong.

Melbourne was Australia's political capital from 1901 until the completion of Canberra in 1927. The Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton was home to Australia's first parliament.

The Story of Ned Kelly , made in Melbourne in 1906, is recognised as the world's first feature film.
